Japan in October: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Hokkaido (Sapporo, Niseko, Furano, Asahikawa)

October is the prime foliage month across Hokkaido: vivid reds and golds spread down from the mountains toward Sapporo. Daytime is cool and usually dry-excellent for road trips and photography-but temperatures drop quickly after sunset, so warm layers are essential. Many lodges begin winter preparations by late October, and some remote roads start to see early snow.

Tohoku & the Sea-of-Japan Coast (Aomori, Akita, Sendai, Niigata, Kanazawa)

October offers crisp, clear air and some of the best fall-color viewing in upland parks-peak foliage varies but arrives later than in central Honshu. Daytime is cool and pleasant for coastal drives and castle-town visits; evenings require warmer layers. It’s a quieter shoulder season for good deals on ryokan and fewer crowds at popular sites like Hirosaki.

Tokyo & the Kanto Plain (Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura, Mt. Fuji approaches)

October typically ushers in crisp, sunny days and comfortable evenings-autumn color begins to appear in parks and temple gardens. This is a popular time for walking tours, cycling along river paths and day trips to Mt. Takao. Temperatures are mild, so layering is useful for morning-to-evening transitions.

Central Alps & Japanese Alps (Nagano, Matsumoto, Takayama, Kamikochi, Mt. Fuji approaches)

October brings spectacular fall color across mid-elevations-Kamikochi and the higher valleys are particularly colorful-and colder nights bring the first snow to the highest ridges. Many mountain huts begin to close after early October, so check availability. Pack warm layers and waterproofs for rapidly changing mountain weather.

Kansai & the Seto Inland Sea (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, Okayama, Takamatsu)

October delivers crisp, comfortable weather ideal for exploring historic Kyoto and coastal Hiroshima; autumn color begins in upland areas by late month. Daylight is pleasant for long walks through shrines and along the inland sea, and crowds are thinner than spring peak weeks. Bring a light jacket for cool mornings and pleasant evening dining outdoors.

Kyushu & Okinawa (Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Yakushima, Okinawa main and outlying islands)

October cools into a pleasant shoulder season across Kyushu: rice fields shine in autumn colors and coastal days are comfortable for island exploration. Yakushima remains humid but colorful, and whale-watching season begins in some areas later in the year. Okinawa shifts to warm, drier conditions-still a good time to dive before late autumn storms.
