Hokkaido (Sapporo, Niseko, Furano, Asahikawa)

June is cool and relatively dry compared with mainland Japan-Hokkaido largely escapes the heavy baiu rains. Days are comfortable for cycling and coastal drives; expect clouds and occasional showers but not the heavy, humid stickiness of Tokyo. This is a good time for wildlife watching and quieter national-park access before the July festivals.

Tohoku & the Sea-of-Japan Coast (Aomori, Akita, Sendai, Niigata, Kanazawa)

June sees the rainy season pressing northward: the Sea-of-Japan side can be cloudy and wet, with long damp spells-Niigata gets its share of soggy days. Farming regions are lush, but outdoor plans may need flexibility; rice-planting scenes are active and photogenic. Train travel is dependable, but expect fewer sunny days and some drizzle.

Tokyo & the Kanto Plain (Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura, Mt. Fuji approaches)

June marks the start of the rainy season (baiu) in Kanto: persistent drizzle, cloudy skies and higher humidity become the norm. Museums, galleries and covered markets are good rainy-day alternatives, but expect damp footwear and fewer clear views of Mt. Fuji. Train and subway services continue to run well, though regional day trips can be soggier and less scenic.

Central Alps & Japanese Alps (Nagano, Matsumoto, Takayama, Kamikochi, Mt. Fuji approaches)

June is the end of the main wet season at altitude-valleys are cool and green, and waterfalls are impressive from snowmelt. Climbing season for high peaks hasn’t officially started, so expect some services at higher refuges to remain limited. Daytime temperatures are comfortable for long walks, but bring waterproofs for occasional rain showers.

Kansai & the Seto Inland Sea (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, Okayama, Takamatsu)

June’s rainy season brings humidity and persistent drizzle to Kansai, making museum days and covered markets appealing. Visibility to distant islands across the Inland Sea is often reduced; gardens are lush and waterfalls run full. Be prepared for sticky conditions and occasional train delays on stormy days.

Kyushu & Okinawa (Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Yakushima, Okinawa main and outlying islands)

June is wet for most of Kyushu as the baiu rain front settles in: expect persistent drizzle, swollen rivers and occasional landslips in steep terrain. Yakushima’s rainforest becomes even wetter and very green-preparedness for mud and leeches is important. Okinawa’s rainy period often starts earlier and is marked by grey, humid days and reduced visibility at sea.
