Jaco Island is a small, largely uninhabited island off the eastern tip of Timor-Leste in Lautém Municipality. It is noted for white coral sand beaches, clear coastal waters and reef snorkeling.
The island’s beaches and fringing coral reefs make it a destination for day trips, swimming and snorkeling in relatively clear water. There are no permanent settlements and the shoreline is prized for its natural, undeveloped character.
Jaco Island is culturally significant to local communities and has long-standing customary importance in local traditions. In modern times it has been managed as part of conservation and protected-area initiatives for eastern Timor-Leste.
The island sits off the easternmost tip of Timor-Leste, close to the mainland villages of Tutuala and Lospalos in Lautém Municipality, and is part of the coastal island groups at the country’s far east.
