Izalco (volcano)

Volcano Small, historically active volcano once called lighthouse

Izalco, once among El Salvador’s most active volcanoes, offers steep trekking routes and coastal views; its historical eruptions made it a noted landmark for sailors and locals.

Main image

Izalco is a young volcanic cone on El Salvador’s western volcanic chain that formed in the late 18th century and became famous for frequent eruptions. Its steep, symmetrical cone is a distinctive landmark on the landscape.

The volcano’s cinder cone and summit crater are visible from surrounding roads and towns, and the slopes are popular with hikers seeking close views of the cone and wide vistas over the volcanic region. On clear days visitors can see nearby calderas and other volcanic peaks from the upper slopes.

Izalco began erupting in about 1770 and remained active for long stretches thereafter, earning the nickname “Lighthouse of the Pacific” for its glowing summit; eruptive activity declined in the 20th century. Its geologically young cone preserves evidence of explosive and effusive eruptions.

Izalco sits in Sonsonate Department in western El Salvador, part of the volcanic ridge that includes Santa Ana and Cerro Verde, and is visible from towns along the Pacific slope.

  • Hiking and visibility: Although activity declined in the 20th century, the volcano remains an important feature in the regional landscape and a popular hike for visitors to the area.
