Religious Site Historic Kremlin bell tower overlooking Red Square

The Ivan the Great Bell Tower is an early 16th-century bell tower located within the Moscow Kremlin and historically served as the principal bell tower for the Kremlin’s cathedral ensemble. It has long been one of Moscow’s most prominent vertical landmarks.
The tower’s multi-tiered whitewashed structure rises above the surrounding cathedrals, forming a focal point in the Kremlin courtyard and aligning visually with the Assumption and Archangel Cathedrals. Its height and central position make it a dominant element of Kremlin views and of the Moscow cityscape when seen from Red Square.
Constructed in the early 1500s, the tower has been rebuilt and altered several times and served as both a belfry and a watchtower; it was historically the tallest building in Moscow for many centuries. The tower houses an ensemble of bells and is integral to the religious and civic functions of the Kremlin cathedral complex.
Situated within the Kremlin walls in central Moscow, the bell tower stands adjacent to the Kremlin cathedrals and is reached via the Kremlin visitor routes and Red Square area.
