Itsukushima
Island Island shrine with iconic floating torii gate
Itsukushima (Miyajima) is known for Itsukushima Shrine and its large torii gate that appears to float at high tide, tame deer on the island and hiking routes up Mount Misen.
Itsukushima is an island in the Inland Sea of Japan, best known for the Itsukushima Shrine and its large offshore torii gate that appears to float at high tide. The shrine complex and island are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major cultural destination.
The shrine is constructed on wooden piers over shallow tidal waters, producing the distinctive floating effect for the shrine buildings and the O‑Torii gate. Visitors also use the island’s walking trails to reach viewpoints and Mount Misen, which offers panoramic views over the Seto Inland Sea; a ropeway shortens the climb for many visitors.
The present shrine structures date from the Heian and later periods and the site has been important for Shinto worship and maritime rituals for centuries. Itsukushima’s combination of built architecture and natural setting underpins its cultural and aesthetic significance.
The island is a short ferry ride from the mainland at Miyajimaguchi and is accessible for day trips from Hiroshima and surrounding cities.
- Tidal setting and photography: The shrine's iconic torii and main buildings are built over the tidal zone so the appearance changes with the tide; best photographic conditions are often at high tide when the gate appears to float.
What to See #
- Itsukushima Shrine: The Shinto shrine complex built over tidal waters with a large vermilion torii gate that appears to float at high tide and supports wooden boardwalks and a sequence of connected shrine buildings.
- O‑Torii (floating torii): The large freestanding torii gate located offshore that is frequently photographed at high tide when it appears to float on the sea.
- Mount Misen: A mountain on the island with walking trails, a summit park and viewpoints; a ropeway provides a quicker ascent option to near the summit area.
How to Get to Itsukushima #
From Hiroshima or central Honshu take the JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi Station (about 25-30 minutes from Hiroshima Station), then walk approximately 5-10 minutes to the ferry terminal and take the frequent ferry (JR ferry or private ferry, ~10 minutes) across to Miyajima/Itsukushima. From the Miyajima ferry pier the Itsukushima Shrine and the famous floating torii are a short walk (5-10 minutes). Note: JR Pass covers the JR ferry.
Tips for Visiting Itsukushima #
- Take the first ferry from Miyajimaguchi (the JR ferry if you have a JR Pass) to arrive on Miyajima for sunrise at the torii - high tide at dawn gives the strongest 'floating' effect and far fewer crowds.
- Approach the shrine along Omotesando from the ferry pier, then stay beyond the main shrine area to walk up to Mount Misen for a quieter panorama of the island and bay that most day-trippers miss.
- If you want more solitude around the torii, check tide times and either aim for high tide at first light or visit after the late-afternoon cruise departures when day-trip crowds thin.
Best Time to Visit Itsukushima #
Best in spring or autumn for the most pleasant weather and the best photographic opportunities of the torii and shrine.
