Itamaraty Palace

The Itamaraty Palace in Brasília is the headquarters of Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a noted example of modernist architecture designed for the federal capital.

Architectural highlights include long glazed façades, a large reflective water feature and expansive interior halls that illustrate the aesthetic used across Brasília’s government complex. The building is commonly visited as part of tours of the city’s official quarter.

Designed by Oscar Niemeyer as part of Brasília’s mid-20th century government precinct, the palace was built to house the foreign ministry and to project a modern national image; landscaping and site planning were integrated into the overall design.

The palace stands on the Esplanade of Ministries in central Brasília, adjacent to other federal buildings and near the National Congress and other civic landmarks.
