Isartor is a medieval city gate in Munich that formed part of the city’s defensive walls and marks the eastern approach to the old town. It is one of Munich’s historic town gates and remains a prominent architectural landmark at the end of a principal old-town street.

The preserved gate includes a tower and vaulted passage and is incorporated into the urban fabric of central Munich; the site also houses a small museum dedicated to local cultural history and the comedian Karl Valentin. The gate is frequently photographed and visited on walking tours of the historic centre.

Construction of the gate dates to the medieval period when Munich’s fortifications were built and expanded; the surviving structure reflects that 14th-century town-wall phase and later restorations. It has been integrated into the city’s civic use rather than serving any defensive function for many centuries.

Isartor stands at the eastern edge of Munich’s Altstadt, near the Isar river and within easy walking distance of Marienplatz and other central attractions.

Isartor sits on the eastern edge of Munich’s Altstadt. The easiest way is to take Munich’s S‑Bahn to Isartor station (central S‑Bahn network) or go to Marienplatz and walk east along Tal/Weinstraße for about 5-10 minutes to the gate. The site is also readily reached on foot from other central tram/station stops in the old town.

• Arrive via the Isartor S‑Bahn stop and approach from Isartorplatz - the gate is immediately adjacent to public transport and is best reached on foot from the square.
• Visit early in the day or late afternoon to avoid midday walking‑tour crowds; many guided city walks pass through Isartor around lunchtime.
• Go inside the Isartor tower to see the Valentin-Karlstadt exhibitions (the site houses the Karl Valentin museum) rather than just photographing the façade - it's a small, quirky museum that many passersby miss.
