The Cuvilliés Theatre is an ornate Rococo court theatre located within the Munich Residenz in central Munich, Bavaria. It was created for the Bavarian court by the architect and designer François de Cuvilliés in the mid-18th century.

The small auditorium is noted for carved wooden ornament, gilded box tiers and richly decorated stage framing typical of Rococo court theatres. Guided visits and occasional performances allow access to the intricately furnished auditorium and boxes.

Built in the mid-18th century for court entertainments, the theatre served the Bavarian ruling family and their guests. Much of the Residenz complex and the theatre interior were damaged in World War II; original carved elements that had been removed or stored were used during postwar reconstruction to restore the Rococo interior.

The theatre is housed inside the Munich Residenz palace complex in central Munich, adjacent to the palace courtyards and museum areas.

• Rococo interior: The theatre is celebrated for its richly carved and gilded Rococo court boxes and interior woodwork, several of which were preserved and reinstated after wartime damage.

The Cuvilliés Theatre sits inside the Munich Residenz in the city centre, a short walk from Marienplatz. Take the S‑ or U‑Bahn to Marienplatz station (central Munich) and walk 5-10 minutes to the Residenz; from Munich Hauptbahnhof it is a 10-15 minute walk or a few minutes by taxi.

• Buy a Residenz ticket that includes the Cuvilliés Theatre or a separate timed-entry ticket for the theatre to avoid long waits; the theatre is reached via the Munich Residenz so entering through the Residenz main entrance is the most direct route.
• Aim for weekday mornings or late afternoons outside peak tourist hours-small guided groups or timed slots reduce crowding and give you a better view of the gilded boxes and ceiling painting.
• Look up: many visitors concentrate on stage details but miss the carved woodwork and gilding in the royal boxes and the painted ceiling; check current photography rules (flash is often prohibited) and consider a short guided talk to get architectural context.
