St. Peter’s Church (Alter Peter) is Munich’s oldest parish church, with origins in the medieval period and later Gothic and Baroque alterations. It occupies a central position next to Marienplatz in the heart of the city.

The principal attraction is the church tower, which visitors can climb by stairs for close-range views over Marienplatz and the surrounding Old Town. The interior combines Gothic structure with Baroque-era fittings and altarpieces that reflect the building’s long use.

Founded in the 12th century, the church was rebuilt and modified across the medieval and early modern periods, acquiring Gothic structure and later Baroque interior decoration. It has remained an active parish through successive restorations.

The church stands on Petersplatz beside Marienplatz in central Munich, making it immediately accessible from the main pedestrian and tourist routes in the city center.

From Karlsplatz (Stachus) it’s about a 6-8 minute walk.
