Irazú Volcano
Volcano High-elevation volcano with multi-colored crater lakes
An active volcano near Cartago with crater viewpoints and a national park. On clear days observers may see both coasts from summit lookouts; visitors use nearby towns as bases for summit visits.
Irazú Volcano is a high stratovolcano in Cartago Province and is Costa Rica’s tallest active volcano, notable for its large summit crater and crater lake. It is reachable by paved road to the summit area where viewpoints and short trails allow close observation of volcanic features.
The main crater sometimes contains a colored, acidic lake and fumarolic activity can alter lake colour and steam output. Clear weather yields long-distance views from the summit across the Central Valley and, on exceptionally clear days, as far as both coasts.
The volcano’s 1963-1965 eruption produced extensive ashfall that affected nearby cities and agriculture, and the mountain remains monitored for gas and seismic activity. Visitor access is commonly regulated when emissions or instability increase.
Irazú sits in the central highlands east of the Central Valley and is typically accessed by road from the city of Cartago and surrounding urban areas.
- Height and visibility: Irazú is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica at about 3,432 metres above sea level and produces dramatic crater views on clear days.
- Historic eruption impact: The 1963-1965 eruption produced heavy ashfall that affected the Central Valley and the city of Cartago; visibility and access can be limited during eruptive episodes.
What to See #
- Summit crater viewpoint: Main crater and summit viewpoints reached by road and short walks that overlook the acidic crater lake and surrounding highland landscape.
- Highland trails and secondary craters: Secondary crater features and highland trails around the volcano that pass paramo-like vegetation and volcanic rock fields.

Public transport & walking: organized day tours and local buses/minivans run from Cartago and San José to the summit area and parking lot; from the parking/visitor area the main crater viewpoints are a short walk (a few hundred metres) along marked paths.
Tips for Visiting Irazú Volcano #
- Go at opening on a clear morning (dry season, roughly December-April) - summit views and the chance to see both Caribbean and Pacific horizons are best before clouds and winds build later in the day.
- Approach via the paved Route 219 from Cartago and use the park's main summit parking/visitor area; that is where the primary crater viewpoints and information signs are located.
- Avoid the large mid-morning tour-bus rush by visiting on a weekday or arriving right at opening; many organized tours arrive after breakfast, so the earliest hours are noticeably quieter.
