Northern Kurdistan (Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Dohuk, Zagros foothills)

Early autumn is a favored time for visiting: daytime temperatures drop to comfortable levels, hillsides turn gold, and the trekking routes regain steady foot traffic. Harvest activity gives local markets a lively feel, especially in Erbil and Sulaimaniyah; clear, crisp mornings are excellent for photography. Expect calm weather with low rain probability and pack a light fleece for cooler mornings and evenings.

Upper Mesopotamia & Mosul Plains (Nineveh, Mosul, Kirkuk)

Early autumn brings welcome cooling and clearer skies; harvest activity livens markets and the plains smell of freshness as temperatures moderate. This is an excellent time to tour Mosul’s heritage sites and sample regional cuisine in open-air settings before winter rains return. Plan for pleasant days and cooler nights - a light sweater will be useful for evenings.

Central Tigris-Euphrates Plains (Baghdad, Karbala, Najaf, Samarra)

Relief begins in September as temperatures ease into the high twenties and low thirties Celsius and the first autumn breezes arrive; evenings become pleasantly warm rather than scorching. This is an excellent time for visiting central shrines and the historic sites around Samarra when the humidity is still low and crowds are moderate. Pack light layers for cooler nights and sunscreen for still-intense daytime sun.

Southern Marshes & Basra Gulf (Basra, Al-Ahwar marshes, Umm Qasr)

Early autumn brings gradually falling temperatures and the marshes feel more pleasant, with wetter channels still navigable and fewer mosquitoes than in mid-summer. This is a favored time for cultural visits and boat trips as daylight hours are comfortable and daylight is typically clear. Light layers for early morning and insect repellent for evening boat trips will be useful.

Western Desert & Anbar (Ramadi, Fallujah outskirts, Al-Qa’im, Rutbah)

Early autumn offers rapidly improving comfort as the intense summer heat fades and nights become pleasantly cool again; daytime temperatures are much more manageable for longer trips. This is a good season for exploring archaeological sites and desert landscapes before the winter rains. Pack light breathable clothing for daytime and warmer layers for nights out under the stars.
