About Innisfallen#
Innisfallen is an island in Lough Leane within Killarney National Park, County Kerry, Ireland, noted for the ruins of an early medieval monastic settlement. The island’s monastic site is an important archaeological and cultural landmark in the Killarney area.
The main feature is the ruined monastic complex and church remains on the island, set within wooded grounds and shoreline views across Lough Leane. Short boat trips from Killarney town or Ross Castle are the common visitor route and make the island a regular stop on local tours.
An early medieval monastic community was established on the island; the site produced the historical record known as the Annals of Innisfallen. The monastery remained a religious centre into the later medieval period before falling into ruin.
