How to Get to IJmuiden#
IJmuiden on the North Sea coast is most commonly reached via Amsterdam Schiphol or Haarlem by combining train and regional bus. The rail+bus combination is practical; taxis are faster but cost more.
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS): Schiphol is the main international airport for IJmuiden. From Schiphol take an NS train to Amsterdam Sloterdijk or Haarlem (20-30 minutes, fares typically €5-10), then change to a regional bus to IJmuiden (bus journey 25-45 minutes, typical fare €3-5). Door‑to‑door travel time by public transport is usually about 1-1.5 hours.
Schiphol and regional airports: For domestic or regional arrivals Schiphol remains the most practical international gateway; from there use the rail+bus connections above or a taxi directly to IJmuiden (taxi ≈30-40 minutes, ~€40-60).
Train: The nearest mainline stations are Haarlem and Amsterdam Sloterdijk; both are served by NS trains from Schiphol and other Dutch cities. From Haarlem and Sloterdijk you transfer to a Connexxion/ARRIVA regional bus to IJmuiden.
Bus: Local/ regional buses (Connexxion and others) run regular services between Haarlem/Amsterdam and IJmuiden (check regional timetables). Single fares are generally in the €3-5 range and journeys from Haarlem take around 20-35 minutes.
