Ifrane National Park lies in Morocco’s Middle Atlas and protects mountain landscapes dominated by cedar and mixed forests, highland meadows and associated wildlife.

Visitors encounter dense Atlas cedar stands, shaded forest trails and upland meadows that are popular for day hikes and nature observation. The park is one of the region’s principal areas for seeing native highland flora and fauna, including Barbary macaques in some zones.

The park was established to conserve the Middle Atlas’s mountain ecosystems, forest resources and biodiversity while accommodating sustainable visitor access and local uses.

Located in the Middle Atlas near the town of Ifrane in central Morocco, the park sits within a highland landscape of mountains and plateaus.

  • Flora and fauna: Home to stands of Atlas cedar and wildlife including the Barbary macaque; the area is valued for its biodiversity and forested landscapes.

What to See #

  • Cedar forests: Extensive stands of Atlas cedar and mixed conifer forests that form core habitat for the park's wildlife and provide popular shaded trails for visitors.
  • Alpine meadows and plateaus: Highland plateaus and alpine meadows used for seasonal grazing and hiking, with pockets of highland flora and occasional snow in winter.

How to Get to Ifrane National Park #

Ifrane National Park is centred around the town of Ifrane in Morocco’s Middle Atlas. The park and its forested areas are reached by road from the town of Ifrane; by car it’s roughly a 1-1.5 hour drive from Fès (around 60-80 km) on the main highways.

Tips for Visiting Ifrane National Park #

  • Head out from the town of Ifrane early in the morning to see cedar forests and to increase chances of spotting wildlife-wild Barbary macaques and rich birdlife are most active at dawn.
  • Stop at the cedar groves near Azrou (a common access point) and allow time for short forest walks rather than just driving through; many visitors miss the quieter side trails that hold larger stands of old cedar.
  • If you plan longer hikes, hire a local guide from Ifrane or Azrou who knows the best trails and seasonal conditions-some higher routes are best visited in late spring to early autumn for reliable access.
