Ifaty

Ifaty is a coastal village area on Madagascar’s southwest coast in Atsimo-Andrefana, known for its beaches, nearshore coral reef and adjacent spiny forest habitat. It is a traditional Vezo fishing community and a regional center for lowland coastal tourism and reef excursions.

Key attractions include snorkeling and diving on the shallow reef, boat trips run by local fishers, and visits to nearby spiny forest reserves that feature baobab trees and endemic flora and birdlife. Accommodation is primarily small lodges and guesthouses catering to visitors interested in marine and natural history activities.

The village developed around artisanal fishing and has integrated tourism alongside traditional livelihoods; conservation projects and community reserves protect patches of spiny forest near Ifaty.

Ifaty sits on Madagascar’s southwest shoreline near the city of Toliara (Tuléar), on a flat, dry coastal plain where reefs lie close to shore and spiny woodland occurs inland.

What to See #

• Reniala Reserve: A protected patch of spiny forest and dry woodland that contains characteristic baobab trees and a concentration of endemic plants and birds, managed as a small community-backed reserve south of the village.
• Ifaty reef and lagoon: A shallow, nearshore coral reef and lagoon system off the coast used for fishing, snorkeling and diving, with a local Vezo fishing community providing boat access and guiding.
