Budapest & Central Hungary (Pest Basin)
November’s greyer skies bring a damp edge, and temperatures slide toward freezing at night in the suburbs and on higher ground. The city’s Christmas markets begin to emerge late in the month, making evening strolls through Vörösmarty Square atmospheric despite the chill. Keep waterproof footwear and a thermal layer handy - tram and metro remain reliable, but walking long distances in the cold is less pleasant.
Transdanubia & Lake Balaton (West and the Balaton Basin)
October brings crisp air and golden vineyards; Balaton’s tourist bustle has largely finished and many hotels offer off-season rates. Hiking in the Bakony or around the Tihany Peninsula is especially rewarding now, while Hévíz remains a year-round spa attraction with fewer visitors. Ferry timetables shorten and some beachfront services close, so check availability if planning day trips between towns.
Northern Hungary & the Mountains (Mátra, Bükk, Eger, Aggtelek)
October often produces striking fall foliage across the Bükk and Mátra; daytime temperatures are comfortable for long walks while nights turn chilly. Lillafüred’s waterfalls swell after autumn rains and the ice caves are dramatic as temperatures drop, although some high trails begin to close. This is a great month for photography, less crowded castle visits and tasting fresh vintages in small cellars.
The Great Plain (Alföld: Debrecen, Hortobágy, Szeged)
October brings pleasantly crisp days and vibrant fall colours across the steppe; cultural life in city centres resumes a quieter rhythm after summer events. Mornings can be foggy, especially near rivers and marshes, which makes sunrise photography atmospheric but can slow road travel. This is an excellent month for visiting open-air museums, sampling harvest menus, and enjoying less crowded countryside roads.
