Budapest & Central Hungary (Pest Basin)

The first warm days arrive in May and the city becomes lively: parks, Danube promenades and outdoor cafés fill up. Weekend markets (like Fény utca) brim with asparagus and strawberries; day trips to Szentendre or the Danube Bend are pleasant before high summer heat. Thunderstorms begin to occur more frequently by the end of the month, so keep an eye on forecasts for sudden downpours and brief delays to riverboat schedules.

Transdanubia & Lake Balaton (West and the Balaton Basin)

The region hits its stride in May - mild, sunnier days encourage vineyard visits and lakeside cafés begin operating full-time. Water temperatures are still building so while sunbathing is comfortable, swimming waits for warmer weeks; bike routes around Keszthely and Tihany are ideal before heavy summer traffic. Bookings start to pick up for June weekends, so reserve lakeside guesthouses early if you want prime spots.

Northern Hungary & the Mountains (Mátra, Bükk, Eger, Aggtelek)

May delivers cool mornings, pleasantly warm afternoons and a dramatic increase in wildflower displays, making it one of the best months for trekking in this region. The tourist season begins in earnest around Eger, and mountain refuge huts reopen weekends; birdwatching in the Bükk is rewarding. Pack a light rain shell and good boots for muddy paths, but otherwise expect excellent conditions for outdoor photography and wine tastings.

The Great Plain (Alföld: Debrecen, Hortobágy, Szeged)

May warms the plains significantly and heralds excellent conditions for outdoor pursuits - wildflower meadows, quieter rural inns and fewer insects than in full summer. This is a fine month for visiting Hortobágy’s shepherding demonstrations and open-air museums, with long daylight for extended drives. Pack sun protection and expect increasingly warm days with occasional thunderheads late in the month.
