How to Get to Huay Xai#
Huay Xai is a riverside border town on the Mekong opposite Thailand (Chiang Khong) and is reached mainly overland via Chiang Rai/Chiang Khong or by river boat up or down the Mekong. There’s no rail service; most arrivals use buses, minivans or the Mekong slow boat to connect to Luang Prabang and other northern Lao towns.
Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI): Many international visitors arrive in Chiang Rai (Thailand) then travel overland to Chiang Khong and cross the border into Huay Xai. From Chiang Rai airport take a bus or shared minivan to Chiang Khong (about 1.5-2 hours, THB 80-150), cross at the border and continue by tuk‑tuk or shared transfer into Huay Xai (short crossing and transfer times).
Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ): Luang Prabang is the nearest larger Lao airport with more frequent domestic and some international flights. Overland bus or booked transfers to Huay Xai are long (many hours) so most travellers combine LPQ with an onward domestic flight to closer towns or take the multi‑day Mekong slow boat (see below).
Train: There is no passenger rail to Huay Xai; the Laos rail network does not currently serve this border town.
Bus / Minivan: Regular buses and shared minivans connect Huay Xai with Luang Namtha, Oudomxay and Luang Prabang; travel times vary (Luang Namtha ~3-4 hrs, Luang Prabang longer). Local minibuses depart from the town’s bus area; tickets are inexpensive but expect basic comfort on longer runs.
How to Get Around Huay Xai#
Huay Xai is best reached overland via Chiang Rai/Chiang Khong border crossing or by Mekong river slow boat to Luang Prabang. Once in town, short trips are most easily done by tuk‑tuk, motorbike taxi or on foot; regional travel uses buses, minivans or boats.
- Border shuttle from Chiang Rai / Chiang Khong (THB 80-150 (plus small border transfer fee)) - Shuttle vans and local buses run from Chiang Rai airport to Chiang Khong (1.5-2 hours). After crossing the border at Chiang Khong-Huay Xai you can take a short local transfer into Huay Xai town; expect to pay about THB 80-150 (Chiang Rai→Chiang Khong) plus a small fee for the cross‑border shuttle.
- Slow boat to Luang Prabang (USD 30-40 (approx.)) - The famous slow boat runs between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang over 1-2 days with an overnight stop in Pakbeng. It’s a scenic but slow option-expect about 2 days of travel including the stop and a fare roughly in the USD 30-40 range depending on operator (prices and schedules fluctuate seasonally).
- Local buses / shared minivans (LAK 60,000-180,000 (depending on route)) - Daily minibuses and buses link Huay Xai with regional centres such as Luang Namtha and Oudomxay. Minivans are faster but tighter on space; buses are cheaper. Travel times are several hours and tickets are sold at the bus area or guesthouses.
- Boat taxis / local river transport (Negotiate locally (small LAK amounts)) - On the Mekong, short boat taxis and freight boats serve local crossings and river villages; prices are small and usually negotiated per trip. They’re useful for nearby riverbank travel but are weather‑dependent and vary by operator.
- Motorbike taxi / tuk‑tuk (LAK 10,000-50,000) - Motorbike taxis and tuk‑tuks are common for short trips within Huay Xai and to nearby attractions. Fares are cheap (negotiate for a fixed short ride) and are the fastest way to move around town, but expect minimal safety equipment.
- Walking - Huay Xai’s centre is compact and easy to walk, with guesthouses, shops and the riverfront within short distances. Walking is pleasant in the early morning or late afternoon-avoid long walks in the heat and carry water on riverfront trails.

Shopping in Huay Xai#
