How to Get to Yan’an
Yan'an is served directly by Yan'an Nanniwan Airport (ENY) and by high‑speed rail to Yan'an South (延安南站). Many visitors also use Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) then continue by high‑speed train or coach to Yan'an.
Yan’an Nanniwan Airport (ENY): The city’s own airport is Nanniwan (ENY), about 40-50 km south of the old city centre. From Nanniwan you can take the airport shuttle coach to Yan’an city (around CNY 20-30, ~40-50 minutes depending on traffic) or a taxi directly to central Yan’an (roughly CNY 60-100, ~30-45 minutes).
Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY): Many visitors fly into Xi’an (XIY) and continue to Yan’an. From XIY you typically transfer to Xi’an’s railway hub (taxi or airport coach, about CNY 20-100 and ~40-70 minutes depending on option) and take a high-speed train to Yan’an South (see train details). As an alternative, there are long‑distance coaches from Xi’an to Yan’an (CNY ~60-120, ~3.5-5 hours) if you prefer a direct surface link.
Train: Yan’an South Railway Station (延安南站) is the high‑speed rail terminus on the Xi’an-Yan’an corridor. High‑speed services run from Xi’an North (and other regional hubs) to Yan’an South: journey time is typically around 2-3 hours and second‑class tickets are commonly in the CNY 70-120 range; trains are the fastest, most comfortable option.
Bus: Intercity coaches arrive at Yan’an’s main long‑distance bus terminals (e.g., 延安客运中心). Buses from Xi’an and nearby cities take about 3.5-5 hours depending on route and traffic; fares are usually in the CNY 60-120 range. Buses are frequent and sometimes cheaper than trains, but slower and less comfortable for longer trips.
How to Get Around Yan’an
Yan'an is most easily reached by high‑speed train to Yan'an South or by flying into Nanniwan for short regional hops. For getting around, a mix of taxis/Didi for convenience and local buses, shared bikes or walking for short trips works best - high‑speed rail plus a short taxi is the quickest combination for most visitors.
- High‑speed rail (Xi'an-Yan'an) (CNY 70-120) - High‑speed trains to Yan'an South (延安南站) are the most reliable way to get to the city from Xi'an and other regional hubs. Trains are comfortable, punctual and cut travel time substantially compared with coaches - expect around 2-3 hours from Xi'an. Book in advance during holidays; stations can be at the edge of town so allow for a short taxi or bus transfer into the centre.
- Long‑distance bus (CNY 60-120) - Long‑distance coaches arrive at Yan'an's main coach terminals and connect to Xi'an and neighbouring cities. Buses take longer than the high‑speed train (typically 3.5-5 hours from Xi'an) but can be cheaper and have more departure times. Expect basic comfort; bring water and snacks for winter or holiday journeys.
- Yan'an Nanniwan Airport transfers (CNY 20-100) - From Yan'an Nanniwan Airport to the city centre you can use the airport shuttle coach (inexpensive, roughly CNY 20-30, ~40-50 minutes) or taxis which are faster but cost more (roughly CNY 60-100, ~30-45 minutes). If you arrive late, taxis are the practical option - keep an eye on official metered cabs.
- Taxis & ride‑hailing (Didi) (CNY 8-60) - Taxis and Didi are the most convenient way to get around Yan'an, especially if you have luggage or are heading to hillier historic sites. Fares start with a small flagfall (typical for mid‑sized Chinese cities) and then charge by distance; short inner‑city trips are inexpensive but longer cross‑city rides add up. Use official apps or insist on the meter for clarity.
- Local buses & city shuttles (CNY 1-3) - Local buses cover the main urban area and are very cheap (usually CNY 1-3 per ride) but can be slow and crowded during peak hours. Routes serve the main markets, bus stations and some attractions; stops are announced in Chinese, so have a map or app ready. Buses are the budget option for short hops across town.
- Bicycle / e‑bike rental (CNY 3-50) - Short‑distance trips in the central districts are easy by shared bicycle or local e‑bike rental; rates are low (a few CNY per half‑hour to day rates around CNY 20-50). E‑bikes are very common for last‑mile travel and exploring neighborhoods, but watch traffic and keep an eye on battery levels for rented bikes.
- Walking - Yan'an's central old town and museum areas are compact enough to explore on foot; walking is the best way to take in the Revolutionary-era sites and local streetscape. Some attractions are on hills, so wear comfortable shoes and plan for warm sun or cold winds depending on season.
