Why Visit Shangluo?#
Set on the southern slopes of the Qinling range, Shangluo appeals to travelers who want mountain scenery and rural Shaanxi culture rather than big-city bustle. Tea terraces and pine-covered ridges frame small towns where you can sample Shaanxi staples like biangbiang noodles and roujiamo, and hear regional Qin opera at local venues. The city’s river valleys and agricultural terraces make it an attractive stop for hiking, food-focused exploration and low-key cultural encounters.
Who's Shangluo For?#
Shangluo sits in the Qinling foothills (Shangzhou district) and is ideal for mountain walking, forest trails and rural villages. Public buses reach scenic valleys and pine forests; bring sturdy boots and expect cool mountain weather in higher spots.
The region offers solid day hikes and ridge routes in the Qinling range, with scrambling and remote trails around Luonan and Danfeng counties. Routes are largely undeveloped, so local guides or a patient map reader help for multi-day treks.
Shaanxi flavours appear throughout Shangluo: hearty noodles, roujiamo-style snacks and local stewed dishes in Shangzhou markets. Meals are inexpensive at small restaurants; try noodle shops and morning market snack stalls for authentic, low-cost regional food.
Shangluo suits budget travelers who like off-the-beaten-path China. Simple hostels and guesthouses cluster in Shangzhou; long-distance buses link to Xi’an. Expect basic facilities, cheap meals and quiet evenings - a good low-cost base for exploring Qinling trails.

Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY): Xi’an Xianyang is the nearest major international airport for Shangluo; there are no regular commercial flights directly into Shangluo. To reach Shangluo from XIY take the airport shuttle bus into Xi’an (¥20-30, 45-60 min) or a taxi (≈¥120-160, 45-60 min) to the city’s railway stations, then continue by train to Shangluo. From Xi’an North railway station you can catch high-speed or fast trains to Shangluo (see Train section) - combined airport transfer + train typically takes 2-4 hours depending on connections and costs will be the sum of the shuttle/taxi plus the train fare.
Train: Shangluo is served by the main Shangluo Railway Station (商洛站). Key long-distance routes run between Xi’an (Xi’an North), Ankang and other Shaanxi cities; high-speed and fast trains are available on some services. Typical travel times from Xi’an are around 1.5-3 hours depending on train type; second-class/high-speed ticket prices commonly fall in the ≈¥50-130 range.
Bus: Long-distance coaches run between Xi’an coach stations (and other regional hubs) and Shangluo; journeys usually take about 3-4 hours and fares are commonly in the ¥60-100 range. Within Shangluo there are local city buses serving districts and nearby towns with single fares generally around ¥1-3.
How to Get Around Shangluo#
Shangluo is easiest to navigate by rail for intercity travel and by taxi or local buses once you arrive. For most visitors, arriving via Xi’an and continuing by train or coach offers the best balance of speed and cost; within the city, taxis and walking are the most practical ways to get around.
- High‑speed & conventional trains (¥50-130) - Trains are the most reliable way to reach and move between cities in this part of Shaanxi. Services call at Shangluo Railway Station (商洛站) on routes connecting Xi’an, Ankang and other regional centres. Travel times to Xi’an vary by service (roughly 1.5-3 hours); second-class/high-speed fares are typically in the ¥50-130 range. Book tickets in advance during holidays and use Xi’an North for most high‑speed departures.
- Long‑distance coaches (¥60-100) - Coaches link Shangluo with Xi’an and neighbouring prefectures; they depart from major coach stations in Xi’an and other cities. Travel takes about 3-4 hours from Xi’an and fares are commonly ¥60-100. Coaches are a good backup if trains are full, but expect longer journeys in peak traffic.
- City buses (¥1-3) - Shangluo has a network of local bus routes serving urban districts and nearby towns. Single fares are cheap (usually ¥1-3), but frequency can be lower in suburban and rural areas. Buses are useful for budget travel but may be slow and crowded at peak times.
- Taxi / Didi (¥10-80) - Taxis and ride‑hailing (Didi) are widely available and convenient for door‑to‑door trips, short journeys or when carrying luggage. Typical short rides in the city centre cost around ¥10-30; airport or intercity transfers will be pricier. Confirm fares for longer trips and expect higher costs late at night.
- Shared bikes & cycling (¥0.5-2 per 30 min) - Shared bike services operate in urban parts of Shangluo and are handy for short errands and exploring compact neighbourhoods. Prices are low (typically ¥0.5-2 per half‑hour) and docking/parking is generally straightforward in the city centre. Use bikes on quieter streets; hilly terrain can make longer rides tiring.
- Walking - Walking is often the best way to explore Shangluo’s downtown and markets - distances are compact and many points of interest are clustered in the city centre. Pavements and crossings vary in quality outside the main commercial areas, so wear comfortable shoes and watch for traffic when crossing major roads.
