Hovhannavank

Hovhannavank is a medieval Armenian monastery complex perched above the Kasagh River gorge in Aragatsotn Province, near the village of Ohanavan. The surviving major structures date mainly to the 12th and 13th centuries.

The complex occupies a steep rocky site with panoramic views of the Kasagh valley and a compact group of stone buildings. The main church and adjacent gavit present carved stone ornament, cross-stones and medieval Armenian architectural features typical of the period. The site is compact enough to see in under an hour but invites close inspection of capitals, inscriptions and khachkars.

The monastery developed in the medieval period and was an active monastic and religious site through the Middle Ages; surviving buildings reflect construction phases concentrated in the 12th and 13th centuries. Like many Armenian monasteries it underwent repairs and partial restorations in later centuries.

Hovhannavank sits on a cliff above the Kasagh River near the village of Ohanavan in Aragatsotn Province, within driving distance of central Armenian population centers and accessible from the regional road network.
