Hospicio Cabañas, Guadalajara

Hospicio Cabañas in Guadalajara is a large early 19th-century charitable complex originally founded as a hospital and orphanage and now functioning as a cultural institute and museum. The site is renowned for an important cycle of murals by Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco.

The most famous interior is the chapel, where Orozco painted large-scale frescoes including the central composition commonly called the “Man of Fire.” The complex’s long arcaded courtyards and galleries frame its architecture and were designed to organise institutional activities.

Founded in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and named for Bishop Cabañas, the institution served charitable and social-care functions; the buildings have since been adapted for cultural use and exhibitions.

The Hospicio lies in the historic core of Guadalajara, Jalisco, and is accessible from the city centre as an institutional cultural destination.
