Hry-ji is a Buddhist temple complex in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, established in the early 7th century and associated with Prince Shtoku. It is renowned for containing some of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in the world.
The compound’s principal structures include the five-story pagoda and the Kond (main hall), both notable examples of early Japanese timber construction and housing important Buddhist statuary. The complex also includes the octagonal Yumedono and other halls that together form a traditional temple layout.
Hry-ji was founded in the early 7th century; many of the buildings date to the late 7th and early 8th centuries following reconstructions. Over the centuries the temple has been repaired and restored but retains original structural elements that illustrate early Buddhist architecture in Japan.
The temple stands in the town of Ikaruga in Nara Prefecture, about 10 km northwest of the city of Nara, in a relatively flat agricultural landscape with easy road and rail links from Nara.
