Bay Islands (Roatán, Utila, Guanaja)

Sunshine and warm sea temperatures define the islands in January, when northeasterly trade winds are gentler and scuba visibility is usually good. Roatán’s West End and Utila’s dive sites feel busy with international divers escaping northern winters, but nights are pleasantly warm so light layers suffice. Boat services run reliably, and coral reefs are accessible without the heavy swell that comes later in the year; pack reef-safe sunscreen and a light rain jacket for an occasional squall.

Caribbean North Coast (La Ceiba, Tela, Trujillo)

January usually feels hot and humid along the Caribbean littoral but with steady trade winds that keep mosquitos slightly less oppressive than in summer. La Ceiba is lively with regional visitors and great for excursions to Pico Bonito or the Cuero y Salado wildlife refuge when trails are drier. Pack light, breathable clothing and insect repellent; river levels are lower, making waterfall and river-rafting excursions more dependable.

La Mosquitia & Eastern Lowlands (Puerto Lempira, Río Plátano)

January is one of the more navigable months in La Mosquitia, with rivers lower and skies frequently broken by sun - ideal for community visits and canoe trips into the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve. Mosquitos are still present; long sleeves and permethrin-treated clothing help. This peak travel window makes small charter flights and lodging fill quickly, so arrange logistics well ahead.

Central Highlands & Tegucigalpa (La Tigra, Celaque, Comayagua)

January brings crisp mornings in Tegucigalpa and higher-elevation spots like La Tigra cloud forest; daytime sun is pleasant for walking the colonial streets. Temperatures in the highlands commonly sit in the low 20s°C by day and tumble toward 10-12°C at night, so a warm layer for evenings is useful. Hiking trails are generally in good shape and La Tigra’s misty views clear often after early-evening rain the previous day.

Sula Valley & North Interior (San Pedro Sula, Puerto Cortés)

January is a good time to be in the Sula Valley: hot, sunny days tempered by occasional coastal breezes and relatively low rainfall make urban exploration straightforward. San Pedro Sula is busy with business travelers and shoppers; excursions to Cusuco National Park are easier when trails are less muddy. Pack light clothing, sunscreen and a small umbrella for errant showers.

Pacific South & Gulf of Fonseca (Choluteca, Amapala, El Triunfo)

January offers dry, hot conditions along the Gulf of Fonseca and Pacific lowlands; Choluteca and Amapala see abundant sunshine and warm evenings. Sea breezes moderate daytime heat, making island-hopping to Amapala practical and boat crossings calmer. Pack sun protection, lightweight clothing and a hat - this is a prime season for coastal fishing trips and beach time.
