Hoang Lien National Park
National Park Vietnamese national park protecting Hoang Lien range
A montane national park in Lào Cai province that includes Fansipan approaches, cloud forest and ethnic minority villages; trekkers come for high‑altitude hikes, biodiversity and views of the Hoang Lien range.
Hoang Lien National Park is a protected area in Lao Cai province, northern Vietnam, covering high-elevation sections of the Hoang Lien mountain range. It includes steep slopes, cloud forests and alpine environments and is a key conservation area for the region’s biodiversity.
The park is widely used for trekking and nature tourism; routes up to the highest summit in the range draw hikers and climbers, and lower-elevation trails pass through forest and agricultural mosaics with ethnic minority villages. Elevation in the park ranges from valley bottoms up to Fansipan at 3,143 meters.
The area was designated for protection in the early 21st century to conserve watersheds, native forests and biodiversity across the Hoang Lien range. Management focuses on combining conservation with regulated eco-tourism and local community livelihoods.
Hoang Lien lies inland from the border with China in northwest Vietnam, with the market town of Sa Pa serving as the primary trailhead and service centre for visitors. The landscape is steep and mountainous, with rapid elevation gain from valley floors to rugged summits.
- Gateway town: Sa Pa town is the main base for treks into the park and for guided excursions to high-elevation forests and ethnic minority villages.
- Biodiversity: The park contains montane and cloud forest habitats at high elevations and is noted for high plant and animal diversity, including many endemic species.
What to See #
- Fansipan: The highest peak in the region at 3,143 meters, commonly called Fansipan, is a major mountaineering and trekking objective and marks the roof of the Hoang Lien range.
