Yuanyang Rice Terraces
GRDN Vast carved rice terraces famed for sunset reflections
Yuanyang’s Hani rice terraces carve Yunnan’s hillsides; photographers and hikers come for reflective paddies at sunrise, seasonal planting scenes and visits to Hani minority villages.
The Yuanyang Rice Terraces are an extensive cultural landscape of terraced paddy fields in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan province, China. The site is recognised for its engineered terraces and associated Hani cultural landscape and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Visitors come for panoramic viewpoints that look over thousands of stepped rice fields carved into steep valley sides, often photographed at sunrise and sunset. Key viewing areas include Duoyishu, Bada, and Laohuzui, each offering different angles on the terraces and nearby Hani villages.
The terraces were created and have been maintained by the Hani people over many centuries as an integrated agricultural and social system. Irrigation channels, stone walls and village clusters were developed to manage water and soil on steep slopes.
The terraces lie in southern Yunnan within Honghe Prefecture around Yuanyang County, set on steep hillsides above river valleys. The nearest county town is Yuanyang and the area is accessible by regional roads from Kunming and other prefectural centers.
- Scale: The rice terraces consist of thousands of stepped fields carved into steep hillsides across multiple townships, creating extensive reflective surfaces in the dry season.
- Best time to visit: Best conditions for mirror-like reflections on the terraces are typically in the dry months after planting and before the rice greens up, roughly November to February depending on local schedules.
What to See #
- Duoyishu viewpoint: The Duoyishu viewpoint on the western side of Yuanyang County is the most visited lookout, offering wide-angle views across layered terraces that cascade down the valley slopes.
- Bada viewpoint: Bada terraces include a sequence of stepped fields known for dramatic sunrise and reflection views and are a short drive from the county town.
- Laohuzui viewpoint: Laohuzui (Tiger Mouth) is a prominent promontory of terraces with close-up views of carved contour fields and is often combined with nearby village visits.
How to Get to Yuanyang Rice Terraces #
The Yuanyang rice terraces are in Yuanyang County, Yunnan, centered on Xinjie (Old Yuanyang). By road they lie about 250-300 km southeast of Kunming - the trip by coach from Kunming South/West bus stations to Yuanyang (Xinjie) typically takes around 5-7 hours. From Xinjie local minibuses, taxis or hired vans connect to the main terrace viewpoints such as Duoyishu and Laohuzui (these roads are short mountain drives of 10-30 km); expect a short walk of 10-30 minutes from parking areas to most overlooks.
Tips for Visiting Yuanyang Rice Terraces #
- Get to the main viewpoints (Duoyishu, Laohuzui/Tiger Mouth, Bada) before sunrise - the terraces lit by sunrise and reflected sky are the classic shots and the best viewing spots fill up quickly.
- Time your visit to the season you want: late autumn/winter (Novâ€"Dec) gives mirror-like reflections in many fields, spring brings fresh green growth, and harvest time (Septâ€"Oct) offers warm, amber tones.
- Stay overnight in a nearby village such as Duoyishu or Niu Jiaozhai to secure early-morning access and avoid the day-trip coach crowds that arrive after sunrise.
Best Time to Visit Yuanyang Rice Terraces #
Two peak windows: November for harvest colors and late winter-early spring (February-April) when terraces are flooded for reflection photography.
