Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara
Historical Site Ancient Japanese capital with monumental temples and Buddha
Nara centers on Todai-ji’s Daibutsu (Great Buddha), Kasuga Taisha shrine and deer-tended parks. Visitors tour large wooden temples, early Buddhist art and compact museum collections from Japan’s eighth-century capital.
The Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara comprise a group of temples, shrines and archaeological sites in and around the city of Nara, Japan, representing the development of Japanese Buddhist, Shinto and imperial architecture from the 7th to 10th centuries. The ensemble includes monumental wooden structures and palace remains from the Nara period.
Key attractions include Tōdai-ji with its Great Buddha Hall, Kasuga Taisha shrine with its thousands of lanterns, and the pagodas and halls of Kōfuku-ji. The Heijō Palace archaeological site preserves the plan of Japan’s Nara-period capital and is complemented by temple precincts set within parkland.
Nara was established as Japan’s first permanent capital in 710 (the Nara period) and became a centre for state Buddhism and imperial administration. Major temples and shrines were founded and patronised by the court, producing enduring wooden architecture and sculptural programmes.
The monuments are clustered in the modern city of Nara and its immediate surroundings in Nara Prefecture, on the Kansai plain east of Kyoto. Many sites are accessible on foot from central Nara and are set within public parkland.
