The Historic Centre of Avignon comprises the 14th-century Papal Palace, the adjacent episcopal buildings and the nearby medieval bridge across the Rhône, all located in the city of Avignon in southern France. The site is notable for its concentration of high-medieval ecclesiastical and fortified architecture dating to the period when the popes resided in Avignon.

The Papal Palace dominates the city with massive stone walls, large ceremonial halls, chapels and fortified towers built during the Avignon Papacy in the early to mid-14th century. The Episcopal ensemble complements the palace complex and the partially surviving Pont Saint-Bénézet links the city to the river landscape.

The palace was constructed and expanded by successive papal administrations between 1309 and the late 14th century to serve as the residence and administrative centre for the popes who relocated from Rome. The bridge was originally built in the 12th century and later repaired; it suffered repeated damage over centuries and only fragments of the original structure remain.

Avignon lies on the left bank of the Rhône River in the Provence region of southern France. The historic centre occupies a raised area within the modern city and is immediately adjacent to the riverfront.

• Papal palace age: The palace complex dates chiefly to the early to mid-14th century and contains large ceremonial halls, private papal apartments and fortified towers that are accessible to visitors on guided or self-guided tours.
• Bridge condition: The medieval bridge is partially ruined; access is limited to the remaining sections on the Rhône’s bank and the small chapel that survives on the bridge head.

What to See#

• Papal Palace (Palais des Papes): A fortified Gothic and Romanesque palace complex built and expanded during the 14th century while Avignon served as the seat of the papacy; it is one of the largest medieval Gothic palaces in Europe.
• Pont Saint-Bénézet (Avignon Bridge): A partly ruined medieval bridge across the Rhône constructed in the 12th century; most of the original spans were destroyed and only a few arches and the chapel survive on the Avignon side.
• Episcopal ensemble: The Episcopal ensemble includes the cathedral and adjacent episcopal buildings that link ecclesiastical functions with the papal complex, forming a concentrated religious precinct.

By train: take SNCF to Avignon-Centre (Gare d’Avignon-Centre) - the Papal Palace (Palais des Papes) and the Pont d’Avignon are a short 5-10 minute walk from that station. If arriving by high-speed TGV use Avignon TGV station on the LGV Méditerranée (about 3 km from the historic core) and continue by local TER train, taxi or shuttle bus for the final 10-15 minutes into Avignon-Centre.

• Arrive at the Palais des Papes at opening (or late afternoon) to avoid mid‑day cruise ship and coach group surges; buying a timed ticket for the palace is the simplest way to skip long queues.
• Don't skip the Rocher des Doms gardens behind the palace-this public park is easy to reach from the palace and offers one of the best panoramic views over the Rhône and the Pont Saint‑Bénézet.
• Visit the Pont d'Avignon (Pont Saint‑Bénézet) later in the day when river cruise crowds have dispersed; the small museum and audio panels are often overlooked by visitors focused only on the palace.
