Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome)
Historical Site Ruined dome preserved as atomic bombing memorial
The Genbaku Dome sits within Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park as the preserved ruin from the 1945 atomic bombing; visitors come for the memorial, museum exhibits and reflection on wartime history.
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial, commonly called the Genbaku Dome or A‑Bomb Dome, is the preserved ruin of the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall in central Hiroshima, Japan. It is a focal point of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and a symbol of the city’s experience of the atomic bombing on 6 August 1945.
The site includes the dome ruin, memorial parkland, the Peace Memorial Museum and multiple monuments and memorials. Visitors typically follow interpretive trails that explain the events of the bombing, civilian impact and subsequent reconstruction and peace advocacy.
The building was designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel and completed in the early 20th century; it was one of the few structures near the hypocentre left with portions of its frame standing after the blast. In recognition of its historical value as an indicator of the destructive effects of nuclear weapons and of the city’s postwar commitment to peace, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in the 1990s.
The dome sits within a compact riverside park in central Hiroshima and is easily reached from the city centre by tram, bus or on foot; the area is densely commemorated and includes museum facilities and monuments.
- Significance and setting: The A‑Bomb Dome stands near the atomic bomb hypocentre and is preserved in its ruined state as a symbol of the bombing; it is part of a larger memorial park with museum resources and monuments.
