Heraclea Lyncestis Archaeological Site

Heraclea Lyncestis is an ancient city founded in the 4th century BC near present-day Bitola. It became an important regional centre under Hellenistic and Roman rule and is now an archaeological park known for mosaics and public buildings.

Key visible remains include an amphitheatre, public baths, basilicas with well-preserved mosaic floors and sections of the city plan showing streets and walls. The mosaics and Christian basilicas date mainly to the late Roman and early Byzantine periods and are notable for their decorative detail.

The city was established in the Hellenistic era and experienced growth and rebuilding under Roman and Byzantine administrations, then declined in the medieval period. Excavations in the 20th century revealed many of the major monuments now presented to the public.

The site lies close to Bitola in southwestern North Macedonia, a short drive from the town centre along the road network linking Bitola with other regional centres.

Heraclea Lyncestis is an archaeological site on the outskirts of Bitola. Bitola is served by intercity buses from Skopje and other Macedonian towns; from Bitola central bus station it is a short taxi or local-transport ride to the archaeological complex (a few minutes by road). Driving to Bitola and then following local signs to the site is the usual approach.

• Visit Heraclea Lyncestis in the morning to avoid the midday heat and to see the mosaics with better light; the archaeological complex is compact and easier to absorb before larger tour groups arrive.
• Combine the ruins with a short walk around Bitola's Shirok Sokak pedestrian street - the site lies close to the city and pairing them makes for an efficient half-day itinerary.
• Look for the well-preserved floor mosaics and the ancient theatre area rather than rushing through the entire site; these highlights are the most visually striking and frequently missed by quick visits.
