The Heptastadion was an ancient causeway constructed in Hellenistic Alexandria that linked the city to the island of Pharos; its name literally means “seven stadia.” It was a major engineering feature of Alexandria’s harbour system in the Hellenistic period.

Built in the early Hellenistic period under the Ptolemaic rulers, the Heptastadion separated Alexandria’s eastern and western harbour basins and provided a land connection to Pharos island, the site of the famous Pharos lighthouse. Over centuries it accumulated silt and was modified by later harbour works and urban development.

The ancient causeway crossed the entrance to Alexandria’s harbours on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast; traces lie in the modern eastern harbour area of the city and under sections of the contemporary shoreline.

Length: The name means “seven stadia,” reflecting its original length of roughly seven ancient stadia or about 1.3 kilometres.

How to Get to Heptastadion#

The site of the ancient Heptastadion lies within Alexandria’s harbour area. It is reached from central Alexandria by road in a few minutes; taxis and local buses run along the Corniche (the coastal road) and across the harbour area. If you are in Alexandria city centre, a short taxi or car ride (typically under 10 minutes) along the waterfront Corniche will bring you to viewpoints over the old harbour where the Heptastadion once stood.
