Heijō Palace
Palace Nara-era imperial palace site and archaeological park
In Nara, the Heijō Palace archaeological area exposes the layout of Japan’s 8th-century capital with reconstructed halls, excavation sites, museums and seasonal cultural events that explain early imperial administration.
Heijō Palace was the imperial residence and administrative centre of Japan’s Nara-period capital Heijō-kyō from 710 to 794. The palace area is one of the principal archaeological and heritage sites in Nara Prefecture.
The palace site is presented as an archaeological park with visible foundation stones, moats and reconstructed buildings such as a large audience hall and gate structures. The on-site Nara Palace Site Museum displays artifacts and models that explain the palace layout and court ceremony.
Heijō Palace was established when the capital moved to Heijō-kyō in 710 and served as the location of imperial government and ritual until the capital moved to Heian-kyō in 794. Over subsequent centuries the site fell into ruin and has been the subject of extensive excavation and partial reconstruction.
The palace site lies in central Nara city in Nara Prefecture, adjacent to modern urban areas and within reach of other major ancient sites such as Tōdai-ji and Nara Park.

- Daigokuden (Great Audience Hall): A large reconstructed ceremonial hall used historically for imperial audiences and state rites; the reconstruction permits visitors to experience the scale of the original building.
- Suzaku Gate and approach: A reconstructed southern gateway area and approach that helps illustrate the palace's original axial layout within the Heijō-kyō grid plan.
- Nara Palace Site Museum: A museum on the site presenting archaeological finds, models and interpretive displays about the palace and Nara-period administration.
