How to Get to Haridwar

Haridwar is easily reached by rail at Haridwar Junction (HW) and by air via Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED) or the larger Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi (DEL). Trains are frequent from Delhi and Dehradun, while road connections and intercity buses link Haridwar with the rest of Uttarakhand.

By Air

Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport (DED): Jolly Grant is the closest airport (about 35-40 km from Haridwar). From DED you can take a prepaid taxi or app taxi to Haridwar; journey time is roughly 1-1.5 hours and fares are typically around INR 1,000-1,800 for a private car. You can also take a taxi or bus to Dehradun railway station (Dehradun DDN) and catch a train to Haridwar for a cheaper onward option.

Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi (DEL): Delhi is the major international gateway for Haridwar and is about 200-250 km away by road. Options from DEL include taking the Airport Express/metro to New Delhi station and then a train to Haridwar (train journey 4-5 hours; see train card for fares), or a direct road transfer by private taxi which takes about 4-6 hours and typically costs around INR 2,500-4,500. There are also regular intercity buses (state and private Volvo services) from Delhi to Haridwar - travel time roughly 5-6 hours.

By Train & Bus

Train: Haridwar Junction (HW) is the city’s main railway station with frequent services to/from Delhi (New Delhi NDLS, Old Delhi DLI, Anand Vihar ANVT), Dehradun (DDN) and other north Indian cities. Journey time from New Delhi is about 4-5 hours depending on the train; ticket prices vary by class - second seating/low-cost options around INR 100-300, sleeper around INR 200-450, and 3A/2A higher (several hundred to ~1,200 INR) for reserved classes. Trains are generally the most reliable and comfortable way for many travellers, especially during festival seasons when road traffic is heavy.

Bus: Regular buses run to Haridwar from Delhi ISBT (Kashmiri Gate) and other regional hubs; operators include Uttarakhand Transport Corporation and private Volvo/AC coaches. Travel time from Delhi by bus is usually 4.5-6 hours; fares for non-AC/state services start low (INR 150-400) while AC/Volvo coaches are commonly INR 400-800. Within the region there are also local buses and shared jeeps for short hops (fares typically much lower).

How to Get Around Haridwar

Haridwar is best navigated by a mix of walking and short rickshaw/autos for inner-city travel, with trains and intercity buses handling longer trips. For most visitors, trains provide the most reliable intercity option while autos, e-rickshaws and app taxis are the most practical ways to get around the city itself.
