Main image

Haparanda Archipelago National Park comprises a series of low islets and skerries in the northern Bay of Bothnia off the coast of Norrbotten County in northern Sweden. The park protects coastal and island habitats representative of the northern Baltic.

Access is by private boat or local boat services during the ice-free season; visitors encounter shallow waters, sandflats, small beaches and birdlife typical of the Bothnian coast. The islands are important for migratory and breeding seabirds and provide quiet, undeveloped shorelines.

The archipelago has been shaped by post-glacial rebound since the last Ice Age, producing a landscape of emerging islets and shifting shoals; it has been protected to conserve these coastal habitats and bird populations. Traditional seasonal fishing and coastal use have occurred around the islands.

The park lies off the coast near the town of Haparanda at the northern end of the Gulf of Bothnia. The surrounding region is flat coastal lowland and shallow sea with many small islands and channels.

  • Dynamic coastline: The archipelago is geologically active in the sense of visible post-glacial land uplift, so shorelines and beaches change slowly over human timescales.
