The SnowCastle has been built repeatedly since the 1990s as an annual attraction for Kemi, rebuilt from compacted snow and ice each winter. Its function has consistently combined tourism accommodation, dining, exhibition of ice art, and occasional events such as weddings and concerts in the snow chapel.
The structure is erected on the shoreline of the Gulf of Bothnia in the town of Kemi, Lapland, directly on the city waterfront. Visitors reach it from Kemi town centre and by road links to the wider Lapland region.
