Halton Castle

Halton Castle is a medieval castle located in Halton, near Runcorn in northwest England, occupying a defensive position on a sandstone ridge above the surrounding plain. The site originated in the Norman period as a motte-and-bailey and the surviving stone keep and curtain remains reflect later medieval building phases.

The most prominent feature is the stone keep on the motte, with fragments of curtain wall and baileys around it; the castle served as the administrative and military center for the local barony. Over the centuries the castle’s defensive role declined and it passed through various owners before becoming a historic site managed for public access.

Today the ruins sit within Halton Castle Park and are visited for their historic fabric and the views across the Mersey plain. The site is within the administrative area of Halton and is accessible from local roads and town centers.
