The Hakkōda Mountains are a volcanic mountain group in Aomori Prefecture in northern Honshu, Japan. The range is known for steep forested slopes, heavy winter snowfall and year-round outdoor recreation.
In winter the Hakkōda area is popular for ski touring, snowshoeing and guided winter mountaineering; in summer the same slopes offer hiking and alpine scenery. Lower elevations host hot-spring resorts and access infrastructure including a ropeway that brings visitors to high-elevation trailheads.
The range is volcanic in origin and has been traversed and used by local communities for centuries. It is also remembered for the Hakkōda Mountains incident of January 1902, when a military training expedition suffered a catastrophic blizzard with heavy loss of life.
The Hakkōda Mountains rise near the city of Aomori in northern Honshu and form part of the volcanic highlands of the region, accessible from local roads and visitor centres around Aomori Prefecture.
- Heavy snowfall: The mountain group receives extremely heavy snowfall each winter, making it a major destination for backcountry skiing and snow-related safety planning.
- 1902 disaster: Site of the 1902 Hakkōda Mountains incident in which nearly 200 Imperial Japanese Army soldiers died during a winter training march, a frequently cited event in the range's history.

- Hakkōda Ropeway and Sukayu Onsen: The Hakkōda Ropeway provides mechanical access from the Sukayu Onsen area up into the Hakkōda highlands and is commonly used by day visitors and ski-tourers to reach higher slopes.

Hakkōda Mountains are reached from Aomori city. Local buses and private transfers run to trailheads and ropeways (e.g., the Hakkōda Ropeway). Trains connect Aomori with larger cities; from Aomori station local transport reaches the mountain access points.
