Hadrumetum
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman city ruins at Sousse, archaeological site
Beneath modern Sousse lie the remains of Roman Hadrumetum; visitors come for exposed ruins, mosaic fragments and the Sousse archaeological displays, often paired with a walk through the old medina and coastal ramparts.
Hadrumetum was an ancient coastal city on what is now Tunisia’s central Mediterranean coast, corresponding to the area of modern Sousse. It began as a Phoenician trading settlement and later developed into a major Roman urban centre.
Archaeological evidence attests to its role as an important port and commercial hub in Roman Africa, with public buildings and urban infrastructure typical of Roman cities. The city continued to be significant through late antiquity before changing after the medieval period.
Hadrumetum was founded in the Phoenician era and was integrated into the Roman provincial system as a prosperous town and port. Over centuries it experienced administrative and demographic changes under successive rulers.
The site lies on Tunisia’s central coast at modern Sousse, facing the Gulf of Hammamet. The remains are largely incorporated into the modern city, with many finds held in local museums.
- Viewing remains: Much of the ancient city's remains are overlain by the modern urban fabric of Sousse, so archaeological finds and museum collections are the best way to see material from Hadrumetum.
