Great Mosque of Sousse

The Great Mosque of Sousse is an early Islamic mosque located within the medina of Sousse, Tunisia, dating to the 9th century. It is one of the principal religious buildings in the medina and reflects the architectural and urban character of Aghlabid North Africa.

The mosque is notable for its fortified, compact exterior and its interior hypostyle prayer hall arranged with aisles separated by columns. A square minaret rises from the structure and the mosque’s design emphasizes both religious function and defensive solidity typical of coastal North African mosques of the period.

The building was erected under Aghlabid rule in the 800s and has undergone repairs and restorations over subsequent centuries while retaining its principal form and key architectural features. Its proximity to the Ribat and the sea links it historically to Sousse’s role as a fortified coastal settlement.

Situated in the historic medina of Sousse, the mosque occupies a central position within the walled old town and is close to other landmarks such as the Ribat and the medina’s souks.

The Great Mosque of Sousse is inside Sousse’s historic medina near the Ribat and Kasbah. If you arrive by train at Sousse Ville station it is an easy 10-15 minute walk into the medina to reach the mosque, or you can take a short taxi ride from elsewhere in the city. Once inside the medina the mosque is reached on foot via the narrow streets.

• Visit early in the morning to see the mosque's courtyard and Andalusian-style arcades before the midday heat and the medina's busiest hours.
• Enter from the medina of Sousse so you can combine the mosque visit with a walk through the old town and the adjacent Ribat; note that access inside may be limited around prayer times, so plan accordingly.
