Hadar, Ethiopia

Hadar is a paleoanthropological locality in the Afar Region of Ethiopia, within the lower Awash Valley, famed for yielding early hominin fossils. The site includes sedimentary exposures of the Hadar Formation dating to the Pliocene and is one of the most important fossil-producing areas for the study of human evolution.

Among the most famous finds from Hadar is the partial Australopithecus afarensis skeleton catalogued as AL 288-1, commonly called “Lucy,” discovered in 1974 and dated to about 3.2 million years ago. The site has produced numerous other A. afarensis specimens plus a diverse assemblage of animal fossils, which together inform reconstructions of Pliocene environments and hominin biology.

Systematic fieldwork and stratigraphic study at Hadar have delineated multiple fossil-bearing beds within the formation; excavations and research have been conducted by international teams since the 1970s. Fieldwork at Hadar continues to contribute to dating, paleoecological reconstruction, and comparative studies across East African fossil sites.

Hadar sits in Ethiopia’s Afar Depression, an arid rift valley landscape traversed by the Awash River system. The locality is remote from major cities; the nearest regional centers are in the Afar and Amhara regions, with field access typically arranged from Addis Ababa by road and air for research teams.
