How to Get to Gyumri
Gyumri is served directly by Shirak International Airport (LWN) and is also accessible from Yerevan's Zvartnots (EVN) via train or intercity buses. The city has a small, walkable centre; longer arrivals from Yerevan are usually best done by train or minibus.
Shirak International Airport (LWN): Shirak is Gyumri’s local airport, about 7-10 km south of the city centre. By taxi you can expect a 10-20 minute ride into central Gyumri; typical taxi fares are roughly 1,500-3,000 AMD depending on time of day and luggage. There is limited scheduled public transport from the terminal, so many travellers use a taxi or a pre-arranged transfer.
Zvartnots International Airport (EVN): Zvartnots is Yerevan’s main international airport (about 120-130 km from Gyumri). From Zvartnots you can take a taxi or airport shuttle into central Yerevan (20-40 minutes, around 2,000-4,000 AMD) and then continue to Gyumri by train or intercity minibus (see Train & Bus card). Driving or taxi directly from Zvartnots to Gyumri takes about 2-2.5 hours and will cost substantially more (typically 20,000-30,000 AMD+ for a private transfer).
Train: Armenian Railways runs services between Yerevan (Yerevan Railway Station) and Gyumri (Gyumri Railway Station). Trains take about 2-3 hours depending on the service; fares are inexpensive (typically in the low hundreds to around 1,500 AMD for standard classes). Check the Armenian Railways timetable in advance - services are limited compared with buses.
Bus / Minibus (Marshrutka): Intercity minibuses and coaches depart from Yerevan’s main bus hubs (check Kilikia and the Northern bus stations) to Gyumri frequently; journey time is about 2-2.5 hours. Fares are generally affordable (around 1,000-2,500 AMD depending on operator and vehicle). In Gyumri itself, local buses and marshrutkas cover most neighbourhoods at low fares (see Getting Around).
How to Get Around Gyumri
Getting around Gyumri is easiest on foot in the central neighbourhoods; taxis and local marshrutkas handle longer trips and airport transfers. For arrivals from Yerevan, pick a train for comfort and a fixed timetable or a minibus for greater frequency and speed.
- Train (Armenian Railways) (≈700-1,500 AMD) - Trains run between Yerevan and Gyumri, arriving at Gyumri Railway Station near the city centre. Travel time is typically 2-3 hours depending on the service; trains are cheap and comfortable for regional travel. Services are less frequent than buses, so check timetables and book in advance if you need a specific departure.
- Intercity Minibus / Coach (≈1,000-2,500 AMD) - Marshrutkas and regional coaches link Gyumri with Yerevan and other Armenian towns; they depart from the main bus stations in Yerevan and stop at central points in Gyumri. Journey time to Yerevan is about 2-2.5 hours. They are often the fastest, most frequent and most flexible option for travellers on a budget.
- Shirak Airport Transfers (≈1,500-3,000 AMD (taxi)) - From Shirak International Airport a short taxi ride (10-20 minutes) brings you to the city centre; taxis are the main reliable option as scheduled public transport is limited. If you prefer, ask your hotel to arrange a transfer to avoid negotiating with drivers. Keep local currency handy - many small taxis are cash-only.
- Local Buses & Marshrutkas (≈100-300 AMD) - Gyumri has a network of local buses and minibuses that serve the city and suburbs; routes cover most of the built-up area and are cheap. Expect simple vehicles and cash fares on board - have small change ready. Timetables can be informal, so allow extra time if you have tight connections.
- Taxis (≈500-3,000 AMD) - Taxis are convenient for short hops, early/late travel and door-to-door trips; many drivers use meters rarely, so agree a price before you go if needed. Rides inside the city are generally inexpensive (a few thousand AMD), but fixed prices to/from airports or intercity transfers should be negotiated up front. Use hotel-arranged or app-based services where available for more predictable fares.
- Walking - Gyumri's central districts are compact and pleasant to explore on foot - walking is often the quickest way to see the main sights and cafes. Pavements can be uneven in places, so wear sensible shoes and allow time for photo stops. For anything beyond the centre, use a bus or taxi.
