Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak, Borneo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for extensive karst limestone, huge cave systems and diverse rainforest ecosystems. The park combines cave tourism, canopy forest and dramatic limestone pinnacles.

Principal highlights are major caves such as Deer Cave and the Sarawak Chamber, long subterranean passages and an underground river system centred on Clearwater Cave. Guided tours and set-route visits take visitors into selected caves and to surface viewpoints of the pinnacles.

The park’s karst towers and cave passages formed over millions of years and the area has been a focus for both scientific speleological exploration and regulated ecotourism. Access is by air or river from regional towns with park entry and guide services required for many routes.

Gunung Mulu sits in northern Sarawak on the island of Borneo, surrounded by dense lowland and montane rainforest and accessed via Mulu Airport and park-operated trails.

  • UNESCO status: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its karst and cave systems and rainforest biodiversity, attracting speleologists and eco-tourists.

What to See #

  • Deer Cave: A very large cave with a long, continuous passage and an enormous entrance that is famous for its colony of bats and dramatic internal scale.
  • Sarawak Chamber: A vast underground chamber regarded as one of the world's largest cave chambers by area; it is a central attraction on many cave tours in the park.
  • Clearwater Cave: A connected cave system carrying an underground river, notable for its clear water passages and for being one of the major cave systems within the park.
  • Limestone pinnacles: Dramatic limestone karst towers and razorback pinnacles on the ridges of the park that form a distinctive skyline and are accessible by trekking routes.

How to Get to Gunung Mulu National Park #

Gunung Mulu National Park is most commonly reached by air. Regular domestic flights operate from Miri Airport (MYY) to Mulu Airport (MZV) - the flight is short (around 30-40 minutes). Mulu airport is adjacent to the park entrance and the park village, so transfers from the airstrip to park facilities are only a few minutes.

There are no road links suitable for general visitors from major cities; the air connection via Miri is the standard access route.

Tips for Visiting Gunung Mulu National Park #

  • Plan flights to Mulu (small commercial services operate from Miri) and sort park permits/tours with the park office on arrival-most trails and cave tours depart from the Park HQ near the airstrip.
  • Time your Deer Cave visit to late afternoon/dusk to watch the bat exodus from the cave mouth; arrive early at the viewpoint to secure a good position before tour groups arrive.
  • If you're considering the Pinnacles, recognise it's a demanding, multi-day trek that often requires advance permits and a guided arrangement-don't assume it's a same-day hike like the show caves.
  • Book cave-guided tours (Deer Cave, Clearwater Cave, Wind Cave) in advance where possible; visitors who only see the main show caves miss the park's riverine trails and Penan cultural experiences.
