Guazapa is a volcanic massif north of San Salvador in central El Salvador, notable for its role as a guerrilla stronghold during the Salvadoran Civil War.
The area offers rough hiking terrain, lookout points and scattered concrete and earthen fortifications from the 20th century; routes lead to ridgelines with views of surrounding valleys and the capital region. Trails are unmarked in parts and conditions can be steep and eroded.
The landform is volcanic in origin and has been a sparsely populated upland used for grazing and seasonal access. During the Salvadoran Civil War (around 1980 to 1992) it served as a base area for FMLN forces, leaving visible military-era remains.
The massif sits north of San Salvador in central El Salvador, rising above the surrounding agricultural valleys and forming part of the volcanic highlands of the country.
