Guanacaste National Park
National Park Protected park conserving dry forest and volcanic landscapes
Part of Costa Rica’s Guanacaste conservation area, the park protects dry tropical forest and volcanic foothills. Visitors come for hiking, birdwatching, guided ranger trails and encounters with regional biodiversity.
Guanacaste National Park is a protected area in Guanacaste Province, northwestern Costa Rica, that conserves tropical ecosystems characteristic of the region. It forms part of the broader conservation complex known as Área de Conservación Guanacaste.
The protected area preserves dry tropical forest, sections of higher-elevation forest and volcanic terrain, and supports a diversity of native wildlife and plant communities. Trails and natural features within the conservation area are used for hiking, wildlife observation, and ecological research.
The park and surrounding conservation units were established to protect biodiversity and watershed resources; the wider Área de Conservación Guanacaste received UNESCO World Heritage designation in 1999 in recognition of its ecological significance and conservation efforts.
The park is located in northwest Costa Rica within Guanacaste Province, in a landscape of volcanic ranges and seasonally dry forests; access is typically from towns and visitor centres in the provincial interior.
- UNESCO connection: The park is part of the larger Área de Conservación Guanacaste, which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
