Guadalajara metropolitan area

The Guadalajara metropolitan area is the urban agglomeration centred on the city of Guadalajara in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. It is one of the country’s largest metropolitan regions and a major economic and cultural hub.

The metro area includes several distinct municipalities with their own centres and attractions. Notable municipalities are Zapopan, which contains large commercial and institutional campuses; Tlaquepaque, known for its artisan quarter and galleries; and Tonalá, traditionally important for ceramics and handcrafts.

The metropolitan area grew around the colonial-era city of Guadalajara and expanded rapidly during the 20th century as industry and services concentrated in the region. Urban growth has led to integrated transport and economic links across multiple municipalities.

The conurbation sits in west-central Mexico in the central valley of Jalisco, with Guadalajara as the administrative and cultural core and surrounding suburban municipalities forming the wider metropolitan footprint.
