Great Hypostyle Hall
Archaeological Site Massive hypostyle hall in Karnak Temple complex
Karnak’s Great Hypostyle Hall in Luxor contains rows of massive columns covered in hieroglyphs; tourists come for scale, reliefs and stage-setting within the wider temple complex.
The Great Hypostyle Hall is a large columned public hall within the Precinct of Amun‑Re at the Karnak Temple complex in Luxor. Built mainly during Egypt’s 19th Dynasty, it is renowned for its dense forest of monumental columns and extensive carved decoration.
The hall measures on the order of a large public building and contains 134 massive columns arranged in 16 rows; the central two rows feature much taller columns that form a raised central nave and clerestory. Many column shafts and architraves carry hieroglyphic inscriptions and reliefs commissioned under Seti I and completed by Ramesses II in the 13th century BCE.
Construction was undertaken in the New Kingdom period by pharaohs of the 19th Dynasty, with Seti I initiating the project and Ramesses II completing and decorating significant portions. Over the millennia the hall was partially buried by windblown sand and later cleared and conserved by archaeologists and Egyptologists in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Hypostyle Hall sits within the Karnak complex on the east bank of the Nile at modern Luxor (ancient Thebes), occupying the central ceremonial precinct dedicated to Amun‑Re.
- Column count: The hall contains 134 stone columns arranged in 16 rows, with the tallest central columns creating a raised central nave and clerestory.
- Lighting and timing: Best lit and most atmospheric in the morning or late afternoon when low light brings out the column reliefs; the site is in the Karnak complex on Luxor's east bank.
What to See #
- Central nave (clerestory): Central nave defined by two rows of taller columns that form a clerestory and allow light into the middle of the hall; these central columns are markedly higher than the surrounding colonnades.
- Side aisles and colonnades: Side aisles comprised of lower columns arranged in multiple rows, creating a forest of stone pillars that support the roof structure across the wide hall.
- Inscriptions and reliefs: Extensive carved reliefs and hieroglyphic inscriptions on many column shafts and architraves, produced during the reigns of Seti I and Ramesses II in the 13th century BCE.
How to Get to Great Hypostyle Hall #
The Great Hypostyle Hall is inside the Karnak Temple Complex on Luxor’s east bank. From central Luxor or the main bus/train area take a taxi or local minibus to Karnak Temple (the complex is about 2-3 km north of Luxor city centre); a walk from central Luxor to the Karnak entrance is typically 25-40 minutes along the main road. Once at the Karnak entrance you enter the temple complex on foot to reach the Hypostyle Hall.
Tips for Visiting Great Hypostyle Hall #
- Arrive at opening time to see the Great Hypostyle Hall in cooler, quieter conditions - midday heat and tourist groups can make the columns congested and hot.
- Start your Karnak visit at the Precinct of Amun‑Re and work into the Hypostyle Hall: moving down one of the less busy side aisles (often the southern side) will let you study carved inscriptions and architraves with fewer people around.
- Allow time to walk the edges of the hall and nearby chapels - many visitors focus on the central axis and miss well‑preserved reliefs and smaller chapels bordering the hypostyle area.
