Great Blue Hole

Monument Massive marine sinkhole off Belize, popular diving site

Off Belize’s Lighthouse Reef, the Great Blue Hole attracts experienced scuba divers to a deep circular sinkhole with sheer walls, vertical caves and Pleistocene stalactite formations.

Main image

The Great Blue Hole is a large submarine sinkhole located within Lighthouse Reef Atoll off the coast of Belize, noted for its circular shape and deep blue interior. It is one of the most famous scuba diving sites in the world and part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System.

The feature is approximately 300 metres in diameter and reaches a depth near 125 metres; its steep limestone walls drop from the rim into deep water. Divers visit for vertical walls, submerged limestone formations and the sense of diving a large, clear-sided sinkhole, while many visitors also view it from small aircraft for the full circular outline.

The Blue Hole formed as a karstic cave system during lower sea levels in the last ice ages and flooded as sea level rose at the end of the Pleistocene, leaving submerged cave structures and stalactites. Today it lies within the coral environment of Lighthouse Reef.

Geographically it sits about 70 kilometres off the Belize coast at Lighthouse Reef, surrounded by the wider Belize Barrier Reef and open Caribbean waters; access is by boat or aerial tour from Belize City and other coastal departure points.

  • Size and depth: The sinkhole is roughly 300 metres across with a maximum recorded depth of about 125 metres, making it a notable deep marine hole in a coral atoll setting.
  • UNESCO site: Part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is frequently visited by dive operators and aerial tour flights.

How to Get to Great Blue Hole #

The Great Blue Hole lies in Lighthouse Reef Atoll about 70 km (43 miles) off the coast of Belize. There is no regular public transport; visits are by boat or liveaboard dive vessels departing from Belize City’s small craft marinas-day trips and diving charters typically sail several hours each way. Charter flights and seaplane operators also offer excursions to the Lighthouse Reef area from Belize City; once at the atoll you must transfer to a boat to reach the Blue Hole.

Tips for Visiting Great Blue Hole #

  • For the clearest water and calmest sea conditions, book a morning flyover or dive trip that departs at first light-afternoon winds often roughen the surface and reduce visibility for both diving and aerial photography.
  • Most visitors see the Blue Hole as a single stop; choose a full-day trip that includes nearby Lighthouse Reef highlights (Half Moon Caye and surrounding coral gardens) to get snorkeling and wildlife alongside the iconic sinkhole.
  • If you plan to dive, go only with operators who require and verify advanced/deep-diver certification-Blue Hole dives reach depths that are beyond basic Open Water limits and many operators will not accept uncertified divers.
  • To avoid the busiest charter boats, book a midweek departure or opt for a smaller liveaboard; for aerial photos, small planes leave Belize City and San Pedro earlier in the day before larger tourist flights arrive.
