How to Get to Rab#

Rab island is reached by a short ferry from mainland ports; most travellers fly into Rijeka, Zadar or Split and continue overland to a ferry terminal. Plan around seasonal ferry timetables-summer offers the most frequent connections.

By Air

Rijeka Airport (RJK): Rijeka is the nearest airport on the northern Adriatic (on Krk island). From Rijeka Airport you can rent a car or take a taxi and drive to the mainland ferry port (Stinica/Jablanac) then ferry to Rab-total travel time to Rab town typically 1-1.5 hours including short ferry crossings; taxi or transfer to the port plus ferry fare apply (ferry fares vary by season and vehicle).

Zadar Airport (ZAD) / Split Airport (SPU): Zadar and Split are alternative international options, with longer overland journeys to the ferry ports. From Zadar the drive plus ferry runs around 1.5-3 hours depending on connections; from Split expect 2.5-4 hours. Seasonal flight and ferry timetables matter for planning.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no direct rail service to Rab island. The nearest mainline stations are Rijeka and Senj; from these points travellers continue by road to the mainland ferry ports (Stinica/Jablanac) to catch the short ferry to Rab (Mišnjak). Trains can get you to Rijeka, then onward bus/taxi to the ferry.

Bus: Croatia’s bus network connects Rijeka, Zadar and other coastal towns with the ferry ports. Seasonal direct bus services (and local buses) operate to the ferry terminals; bus + ferry combinations are common-expect total travel times from Rijeka around 60-90 minutes and from Zadar/Split longer. Check Jadrolinija and local bus timetables in summer for direct connections.

How to Get Around Rab#

Access to Rab is a two‑step journey: reach a mainland port by air/road then take a short ferry. Once on Rab, the town is small and best explored on foot, though a car helps to reach more remote beaches.

  • Ferry (Jadrolinija / local lines) (HRK 10-HRK 60) - Ferries from mainland ports (e.g., Stinica to Mišnjak/Rab) run frequently in summer and less in winter. Crossing times are short (often 10-20 minutes for car ferries); passenger fares are modest but vary by season-check Jadrolinija for schedules and exact fares.
  • Car / Car ferry (HRK 50-HRK 200 (incl. ferry)) - Driving to Rab via the mainland ferry is the most flexible option; vehicle ferries operate on main crossings. Expect seasonal traffic-arrive early for peak summer sailings. Fuel and vehicle ferry fares add to costs.
  • Bus (regional coaches) (HRK 30-HRK 120) - Regional buses run from Rijeka, Zadar and other coastal cities to the ferry ports; combined bus+ferry routes are common in summer. Buses are economical and useful if you don’t have a car; journey times depend on transfer waits.
  • Taxi / Transfer (HRK 200-HRK 600) - Taxis or private transfers from nearby airports or Rijeka station to the ferry ports offer door‑to‑door service-convenient for groups or with luggage but pricier than buses. Pre‑booking in high season is recommended.
  • Walking - Rab town centre is compact and very walkable; beaches and the old town are best explored on foot. Expect some hills and cobbled streets near the historic core.
