Goris Travel Guide
City City in Syunik, Armenia
Perched on a stepped cliffscape, Goris blends rock-cut houses with Soviet apartment blocks. Visitors use it as a gateway to Khndzoresk’s hanging bridges, Tatev cable car, wine cellars, and subterranean caves.
Why Visit Goris? #
Rugged Syunik landscapes and a weathered stone center draw travelers seeking both history and dramatic scenery. Nearby Old Khndzoresk cave village and the Tatev cable car are signature experiences, while the town’s steep streets lead to markets selling dried fruits, handmade carpets and hearty stews like dolma. Goris’s carved rock formations and proximity to ancient monasteries make it a gateway for exploring southern Armenia beyond Yerevan. Even brief stays feel richly textured.

How to Get to Goris
Goris is reached mainly by road from Yerevan after arriving at Zvartnots (EVN) - there are no practical rail options. Intercity buses and marshrutkas provide the main public links, with journey times of several hours through mountainous roads.
Zvartnots International Airport (EVN): The main international gateway; from Zvartnots take the airport bus or taxi into Yerevan and then an overland bus/marshrutka to Goris. Taxi to Yerevan centre costs ~3,000-7,000 AMD; the transfer to Goris by road from Yerevan takes about 4-5 hours.
Shirak/Gyumri Airport (LWN): Shirak is distant from Syunik province (several hours’ drive) and is not a practical arrival point for Goris unless combined with overland travel through Yerevan or via private transfer.
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service to Goris; Armenian rail services do not serve most of Syunik province - Yerevan main station is the rail hub.
Bus / Marshrutka: The usual way to reach Goris is by overnight or day coach/minibus from Yerevan’s central bus terminals. Travel time is commonly 4-6 hours depending on road conditions; fares are moderate (a few thousand AMD). Buses and marshrutkas run less frequently than for closer towns, so check schedules in advance.
How to Get Around Goris #
Goris is small and walkable around the main squares and Old Town; the steep, winding streets mean good shoes are useful. Many attractions in town are reachable on foot. Intercity minibuses and buses connect Goris with Kapan, Yerevan and other regional towns; taxis handle local trips. Renting a car is convenient for exploring the surrounding natural areas and stone formations, but expect rural roads and occasional rough surfaces.
